Coello-Tapia make a strong start: through to the round of 16 in 58 minutes. Stupa-Sanz and Ortega-Araujo also impress, Icardo makes a successful return

Fifty-eight minutes. That was all Arturo Coello and Agustin Tapia needed for their first match at the Oysho Milano Premier Padel P1. The world number ones, who arrived in Italy after winning three consecutive titles in Paris, Rotterdam and Düsseldorf, defeated Arnau Ayats and Emilio Chamero 6-3 6-3. It was a convincing debut that drew fans to the Allianz Cloud, eager to witness the extraordinary talent of Arturito and Agus. If they reach the final — which they won in 2024 and lost last year — they will play in Milan every day until Sunday. Their opponents in the round of 16 will emerge from the match between José Jimenez and Alex Arroyo (14) and youngsters Mariano Gonzalez and Curro Cabeza. Coello and Tapia were not the only winners: the morning session on day three also saw Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz, runners-up at the last two tournaments, secure victory. The number four seeds, who could now face Coello and Tapia in the semi-finals in the top half of the draw, beat qualifiers José Solano Marmolejo and Ramiro Pereyra 6-3 6-2.

In the women’s draw, with the top four pairs in the world set to make their debuts on Thursday, Tamara Icardo celebrated her return alongside Claudia Jensen after missing three tournaments through injury, beating Amanda Lopez and Camila Fassio 6-4 6-1. The number five seeds, Marta Ortega and Sofia Araujo — the latter a finalist in Milan in 2023 — also made a winning start, defeating Jana Montes and Marta Barrera in one hour and five minutes. The ‘doctora’ and the Portuguese player have, moreover, already secured their place in the quarter-finals following the withdrawal of Marta Borrero and Teresa Navarro, who had been due to face them in Thursday’s round of 16.
